I had to have blood for my surgery, but I donated blood each week for a month before the surgery, so they used my own blood. Can she do that? There is ALOT of pain, but they keep you on pain meds so it is not bad. There is some risk involved, but these people (the surgions) know what their doing, I don't have the numbers BUT fatality is low. I do have some trouble bending over, but for the most part I am able to do everything I want. I am a EMT, and recently had a baby. My surgery actually went really bad, so if you want a worse case story give me an email...med109@q.com

I had this surgery done wheni was 14 and had a severe double curve not sure of the degree but it was bad,i was only given the one rod not sure why but thats what i was given its called a harrington rod and i now have a very stiff back but was told to expect this,
it can limit movement but you do soon adjust to it at first i used to struggle just to tie my laces and had to have help but i have now mastered a way of doing it with no help,i dont really notice the stiffness now as i am used to it,
at first say a few days after surgery i was able to feel the rod there it didnt hurt just felt uncomfortable but as time went by i forgot about it and now i forget its even there, but it shows like a little bump under the skin at the top of my scar,
pain wise it does hurt its about 9 out of 10 for pain but the pain changes as each day goes by sometimes it aches sometimes it stings and other times it burned so its always different but they provide excellent pain relief,
i was given a blood transfusion as with this surgery there is quite a bit of blood loss so i needed it for my recovery, and risk wise any surgery holds a risk but spinal is higher as thats where all the nerves are and things,my spinal cord was exposed during mine but i was still fine and can walk and everything,
fatality is rare during surgery but its not just the surgery that is risky its the recovery too i had complications around 3 days later and almost died as a result,i had breathing difficulties and my blood pressure fell dangerously low and so i passed out and didnt come around for a few days,
and i almost heomeraged from my wound which was closed with 70 clips but i recovered and was told this kind oif thing is very rare but can happen,i was told before surgery that this could happen as all patients were but others were fine but i happened to have this happen to me,
i am now in my thirties and havent had any affects after my ordeal and have not needed any further treatment,i am ok now though i do get back aches at times, not sure if i have been of any help.
