Could She Do Yoga After Having A Surgery On Her Back?

My wife had a fusion surgery done on her back in Jan. 2008. She wants to know if she could do yoga?

    The answer is yes, but maybe not all of the poses, especially those that involve a fair bit of backwork. Also, core muscle work (in Yoga we call the pelvic core hold the Mula Bandha, and the Stomach core hold the Uddhiyana Bandha-check it out online) is very important to help support the spine. Make sure you find a Yoga teacher who is used to working with people who have had injuries, and know how to modify the poses accordingly. This may take a while to find, but its worth it; the Yoga world is full of overconfident teachers who force their students too hard (not the majority, but they are there). Not trying to put you off, but this is the reality. If she feels like the teacher is aggravating her injury, it is best to respectfully leave the class.
    Consult your physician first before attending though.
    I’ll never teach a student with this kind of problem until a professional physician (such as a chiro or physio) has given the green light.
