Hey, I’m Getting Lower Back Surgery, I Was Wondering If I Will Be In A Wheelchair During The Recovery Period?

I was recently diagnosed with a sixth lower vertebrae and a pars defect in my extra vertebrae. The more I see doctors over the last several weeks, the more it is becoming clear that it looks like I will be needing surgery, I was just curious on what the recovery period is like, if anyone can answer this question, it would be a TREMENDOUS help in making a decision. Thank you.

It completely depends on the specific surgery you have and the training/opinion of your surgeon. The only person who will be able to answer this for you is the surgeon himself.
It is perfectly possible, even likely, that you will not need a wheelchair at all for any of the recovery period because if the aim is to keep you up and mobile then that’s what they tend to like to do from day one post-operation.
All back surgery carries a risk of complications though and if something goes wrong then you could need a wheelchair for a bit.

My grandmother has had two back surgeries and was never in a wheelchair during recovery. She did have to wear a back-brace after the first one, but I think that was it. I would talk to your doctor though just to make sure. Good luck! Recovery can be hard but you’ll feel better in the end. :)
