How bad does labour hurt? I’m so worried I won’t be able to handle it!?

Greetings! Well, here is a back pain question that will help answer a common query. Good luck!

Okay, I have SUCH a low pain tolerance. Sometimes, when I get bad dieareeah (I’m lactose intolerant and this happens when I drink milk) I get the most painful cramps. Seriously, I get so overheated and start sweating like crazy, and it hurts so bad I have to scream out. During those moments I feel like I can’t take any more pain.

How will I ever handle labour?

Didn’t you enjoy that? I did. I think I may add my own answer to that back pain question. How about you?

Have a great day!

Childbirth is a miracle. It is absolutely the worst pain ever (at that moment) but once you hold your little one.. all the pain is forgotten. Well for me it was anyways. I was 17 when I went into Labor, I’m 5’2 and 120lbs I’m very small, and I had a 9lb baby. My family has wide hips though so maybe thats why I got off lucky and didnt have to have a c-section. It’s perfectly OK to scream. I would recomend getting staidol only when the pain is unbearable, and then having a epidural once your almost ready to push. I had some back pains that were bothering me and i had staidol BEST FEELING EVER but the more doses you get, the less the pain is dulled. So by the time my back pains seemed like nothing and contractions came on, I felt everything for 6 hours it was horrible. Epidurals are amazing if you have a low pain tolerance. It all seems scary, and you’ll hear alot of horror stories, but you’ll get through it, and be happy with your little one! it’s worth the pain, definitely.

Labour can be very painful. On the other hand, labour pain is unusual – it is very much affected by things like state of mind and environment. That is why pain management techniques can work in labour. It is also why some women describe it as unbelievably horrible, while others thought it was quite manageable.

I am the worst wimp in the world when it comes to pain, but I went through two labours with no medication at all. It is just a different kind of experience.

When and if you are pregnant, I would suggest finding a really good childbirth class which teaches natural pain management techniques. There is always anesthetic if you want it, but being prepared to deal with labour pain is a real confidence booster, and you might surprise yourself.

I have a pretty low pain tolerance and I handled it pretty well. the contractions are horrible but they are weird its not like OMG pain it builds up and you can feel them getting stronger. pushing was not too bad nowhere near as bad as the contractions. I would suggest the breathing techniques and relax as much as you can in between contractions.Towards the end I would actually fall fully asleep in between contractions for like 2 minutes. The weird thing I thought about labor was that it was intense pain and then nothing for like 2 minutes and then intense pain. I would say to get the epidural.

And honestly I know a lot of people say it you will instantly forget the pain when you see your baby!

Don’t worry about it. YOu just take it one contraction at a time. They start off small and gradually increase in intensity. I prefer not to have an invasion labor (where doctors and nurses are constantly coming in and checking on you) but I’m all for medication if you’re feeling out of control or you can’t handle it.

I ended up getting an epidural at 8.5cm because I had an emergency c-section. After I got the spinal block I didn’t feel anything at all. It was really kind of odd (going from constant pain to no pain). Don’t fret over it. It’s nothing to worry about.

I had the same opinion as Foxxygal above, i thought because i had endometriosis and had suffered with excruciating menstrual cramps for years that the contractions would be no worse than that, i was mostly worried about the baby actually coming out. Well i only gave birth two weeks ago and I can honestly tell you it was the most excruciating thing I have ever been through or am ever likely to go through again. To say any less to you would be a lie and I think you need to be prepared for it, unlike me! The good news is though, the actual delivery didnt hurt barely at all!
It is really important that you remember during the contractions to breathe and focus on that, there is no point losing control and screaming etc because it is not going to help you at all, it just makes things worse. Take the epidural or pethidene, (i had an epidural and although it wore off i at least had an hour of relief), remember to breathe and that there is no other way to do this and as soon as you see that baby u will forget (for a few minutes anyway) the pain you have just been through.

The contractions are TERRIBLE! Not trying to scare you, but they are really bad. Get an epidural and you wont feel a thing. Seriously. When I was pregnant I believed I could deliver naturally without any pain meds because I was used to getting bad menstral cramps…. BOY was I ever wrong!!! My water broke so I went to the hospital and after being there for about 4 hours, the contractions came on strong (I was already dilated to 4 cm for a week). I only felt like 10 strong contractions and hollered for the nurse and said “I NEED AN EPIDURAL AND I NEED IT NOW!!!” They were sooo painful. Once I got the epidural, I felt absolutely nothing. The delivery went smoothly. So don’t freak out, you’ll be just fine once you get the epidural. Love me some epidural LOL!

Well if you’re worried about the pain, (which on a scale from 1-10 is like 30) sorry but its true. Why don’t you ask for pain relief like an epidural? I can’t handle much pain either, I was 7cm dilated when I finally got the epidural, up to that point I thought I was gonna die yet from the pain, I don’t know how woman can do it with no pain relief, I think they are so tough, I wish I coulda done it, but I couldn’t. Good luck to you.

If your pain thresh hold is as low as you say, take a big breath and don’tt worry just speak to your doctor and he will be able to advise you on what options you have for the birth, it doesn’t have to be scary its an amazing experience which you don’t have to suffer threw,
Good luck, relax enjoy the tiime with your new baby

Contractions hurt quite a bit more than I was anticipating. And it really was unbearable. I was screaming for the epidural before we even go to the hospital and I was only dilated to a 4. The good news is that no one has ever died because of too much pain. As someone else said, you have to do it, there’s no way around it. Look into your options for pain management and educate yourself about the process, this will give you more confidence.

I thought i would never be able to handle the pain of labor but i handled it well but i was lucky and had barely any pain. But your body will prepare itself for labor such as the braxton hicks and stuff like that. But if the pain gets bad there is always the epidural it helps alot.

  21. Pippin Says:

There is no way to quantify pain.
And every labor is different. Some women swear that it hurt but was entirely tolerable. Others will say that it was unbearable from the word go.

I would recommend taking a childbirth class to help you learn pain management techniques. If you do find that it’s more than you can cope with, you can request medication.

look at it this way.. every time i got all anxious about labor, i just told myself there is nothing you can do about it. This might sound harsh but whether or not you think you can handle it, you have to and will. That baby has to come out some way, regardless of whether it will hurt or not. But trust me those sleepless nights in my opinion are way worse than actual labor :p

I have a high pain tolerance, so I don’t think i’ll be much help. My pain was quite manageable. I made it to 7 cm without feeling much pain. It was more uncomfortable for me than anything. I started feeling some pain when I was hitting the transition stage which is 7-10 cm. And it hurt, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

My wife’s first labour was easier than she expected. She thought it was going to be absolutely unbearable after hearing all the horror stories, but when it came to it, she handled it really well. She ended up not having any drugs or epidural, even though she was keeping her options open. She just had the laughing gas and before she knew it, she was holding our baby.

So it seems every woman is different. Fingers crossed you may find labour easier than you build it up in your mind to be.

You get an epidural. I have a low pain tolerance also, and somehow I made it to 9cm dialated before I got the epidural. I couldn’t handle anymore. And then it was great.

first thing…classes to help manage pain and stuff…not gunna help lol it starts out with menstral feeling cramps that just intensify, and i’m not gunna lie they do hurt. I was in labour for only 3 hours, so i went from nothing to contractions that lasted 50-60 seconds and came every 2 minutes, i was laying on the couch the whole time but as soon as i got up when one came along i had to hunch over till it was over…if your not against an epidural, then get one, i didn’t have time to get drugs. I will say though after the contractions, the actual birthing doesn’t really hurt at all…the doctor broke my water for me and it kind of felt nice lol weird as that is, and then having him…nothin…you can feel it obviously and tell if your pushing head or shoulders, but it really didn’t hurt. Saying that…i didn’t tear, and he was only 6lbs7oz so pray for a little guy! but i promise as soon as its done you won’t even think twice about the pain :)

I do want to warn you though, if you breast feed ask what pain meds you can take because the breast feeding contracts your uterus to get it back in shape, and that feels like your contractions, the whole time kiddo is eating, it goes away after a couple weeks but for me that was worse than the labour. I’m not trying to scare you just warn you cuz nobody told me about that part so i was freaked out and thought something was wrong. Good luck, you’ll do super!! :)
