Childbirth is a miracle. It is absolutely the worst pain ever (at that moment) but once you hold your little one.. all the pain is forgotten. Well for me it was anyways. I was 17 when I went into Labor, I'm 5'2 and 120lbs I'm very small, and I had a 9lb baby. My family has wide hips though so maybe thats why I got off lucky and didnt have to have a c-section. It's perfectly OK to scream. I would recomend getting staidol only when the pain is unbearable, and then having a epidural once your almost ready to push. I had some back pains that were bothering me and i had staidol BEST FEELING EVER but the more doses you get, the less the pain is dulled. So by the time my back pains seemed like nothing and contractions came on, I felt everything for 6 hours it was horrible. Epidurals are amazing if you have a low pain tolerance. It all seems scary, and you'll hear alot of horror stories, but you'll get through it, and be happy with your little one! it's worth the pain, definitely.

Labour can be very painful. On the other hand, labour pain is unusual - it is very much affected by things like state of mind and environment. That is why pain management techniques can work in labour. It is also why some women describe it as unbelievably horrible, while others thought it was quite manageable.

I am the worst wimp in the world when it comes to pain, but I went through two labours with no medication at all. It is just a different kind of experience.

When and if you are pregnant, I would suggest finding a really good childbirth class which teaches natural pain management techniques. There is always anesthetic if you want it, but being prepared to deal with labour pain is a real confidence booster, and you might surprise yourself.

I have a pretty low pain tolerance and I handled it pretty well. the contractions are horrible but they are weird its not like OMG pain it builds up and you can feel them getting stronger. pushing was not too bad nowhere near as bad as the contractions. I would suggest the breathing techniques and relax as much as you can in between contractions.Towards the end I would actually fall fully asleep in between contractions for like 2 minutes. The weird thing I thought about labor was that it was intense pain and then nothing for like 2 minutes and then intense pain. I would say to get the epidural.

And honestly I know a lot of people say it you will instantly forget the pain when you see your baby!

Don't worry about it. YOu just take it one contraction at a time. They start off small and gradually increase in intensity. I prefer not to have an invasion labor (where doctors and nurses are constantly coming in and checking on you) but I'm all for medication if you're feeling out of control or you can't handle it.

I ended up getting an epidural at 8.5cm because I had an emergency c-section. After I got the spinal block I didn't feel anything at all. It was really kind of odd (going from constant pain to no pain). Don't fret over it. It's nothing to worry about.

I had the same opinion as Foxxygal above, i thought because i had endometriosis and had suffered with excruciating menstrual cramps for years that the contractions would be no worse than that, i was mostly worried about the baby actually coming out. Well i only gave birth two weeks ago and I can honestly tell you it was the most excruciating thing I have ever been through or am ever likely to go through again. To say any less to you would be a lie and I think you need to be prepared for it, unlike me! The good news is though, the actual delivery didnt hurt barely at all!
It is really important that you remember during the contractions to breathe and focus on that, there is no point losing control and screaming etc because it is not going to help you at all, it just makes things worse. Take the epidural or pethidene, (i had an epidural and although it wore off i at least had an hour of relief), remember to breathe and that there is no other way to do this and as soon as you see that baby u will forget (for a few minutes anyway) the pain you have just been through.
