As long as the surgical incision is closed/healed up, I would look into aquatic therapy for him… if he were to walk on an aqua treadmill a few times a week I suspect you will be able to regain muscle condition.
Here are a few links to check out — http://www.tailsofrye.com/Rudy_Demo.html — http://student.santarosa.edu/~dwomack/dr…http://www.canine-campus.com/aqua.htm
Now that you’ve seen how it works, this site is for the Association of Canine Water Therapy and a list of clinics in North America.http://www.caninewatertherapy.com/direct…http://landofpuregold.com/challenge-phys…
I think this type of rehab would do wonders to build him back up. Good luck with your boy!

Ask the Vet–that is his job.

the best way to build up your dogs leg strength is to take him for very short walks to start with, even if it is just to the end of the street and back again. once he gets used to walking just that short distance, walk him a little further and just gradually build up the length of your walks, this will gradually makes his legs stronger and stornger and he will come on leaps and bounds.
but be very carefull not to start out with to long a distance or else you will do more damage than you think.
it will take a little while but he will start to become more and more mobile, try not to play with a ball and things like that as he mite end up hurting his back again, wit until he has built up some strenght first.

with pacience ,
if it was a back surgery it will take time .
I would suggest asking the vet a good at home therapy you can do.

The best person to ask this question to is the vet, that performed the back surgery! He will give you all the information and instructions on your dogs recovery, and activities, that you need, and answer any other questions you have! I agree with you, Thank God he is walking now! He is very lucky, if he was completely paralyzed. That’s amazing! Give the vet a call! Hope he’s back up and running around soon!

Surely your vet would or should have told you. My daughter has two GSDs and one has to build up strength in his back leg muscles to avoid having hip replacement and she takes him to “tread water” sorry dont
know what it is callled but you see horses walking water when they want their strength built up. For Hamish, thats dogs name, it is really working – costly – about £30 for half hour but if it works !—-

I would suggest getting him swimming! Ofcourse it depends if he likes swimming and if you have any bodies of water near by – but it would help.
Besides that, just lots of walking without pushing him too much.
