A friend of mine has a herniated disk and needs back surgery, but I have no idea how much it cost. Does anyone know?

Get your friend to go to a chiropractor with a good reputation first. Regardless of whether or not your friend has insurance to cover chiropractic they should absolutely try this first. The success rate for surgeries of this type (disc herniation) is 50-60% with the best numbers, in studies done for the American Medical Association (meaning the numbers are probably inflated). Remember, if the chiropractor doesn’t work, he’ll be no worse for the wear, can either try another chiropractor or try the surgery but if the surgery fails, that’s it, no more chances, he’s stuck with whatever he’s stuck with.
Now to answer your question, if he has good insurance/workmans comp if it happened on the job, then he probably won’t have to pay a ton out of pocket. If he has no insurance, you’re looking at upwards of $30,000 probably more when you figure in orthopedic devices, as well as physical therapy rehabilitation and other follow up services. Most chiropractors charge $20-50 a visit depending on your location, so it is much cheaper, and he has a good shot at getting it actually fixed.

if got healthcover? only the “gap” in the cover, and a bit extra
also is it really that bad!!?? my sister had 2 done, and a fusion of bone, in extreme pain before, now, she wish it had NEVER been done, can’t sit down for more than 10 min at a time, in screaming pain, at least once a week. and ABSOLUTELY nothing can be done now to ease the agony!
doctor says, i could not foresee what has happened, as you were told something like this could happen, in one form or other

Back surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her Spine surgery in India by the company called Forerunners Healthcare .The Price for the surgery she paid in India was very less. She paid 25 % of the cost she was quoted in America.
Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. They arrange spine surgery for foreigners in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as Spine and other orthopedic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
