I have bad back pain and was told to stretch every morning. What does everyone suggest? I also need general stretching because I need to become more active.

Make sure that you start out slow and work timing up as you go along. Walking is the best exercise for back problems. If you can find a good occupational physical Therapist, they can get you back in shape. If they hurt you and insist “no pain no gain” leave. I did a great opt and did work my boomba off to get back in shape. However, I went back to pushing myself too hard and was permanently injured. Be careful.

Close to 90% of our population suffers from lower back pain – LBP at one point in his or her life and many are told to stretch the area of concern.
However, you may need to actually strengthen the area versus stretch it. See, if you’re sitting down all day and there is a good chance you are, certain muscles shorten and lengthen. The short muscles are tight and long muscles weak. Bottom line, stretch the tight and strengthen the weak. The same goes for people who stand all day. Our bodies adapt to our surroundings as do our muscles. Stronger muscles dominate and weaker ones don’t have a chance to do their job.
My suggestion is to hire a well qualified fitness instructor, like myself (wink) who has a complete knowledge of the body. I think Pilates would be amazing for you and it would balance you out.
If you’re looking for something to make it feel a little better, check out the article below. I’ve been a trainer for over 10 years and I know the benefit of foam rolling, however, I HIGHLY suggest you do this with a fitness professional or at your own risk.
Best of luck!

I went to physical therapy because I had back pain, after I had a baby about two years ago and I work in a nursing home, so that is why I got the back pain, anyway, I received instructions for Kegel exercises, yes this is what they tell new moms to do after having babies, but it really does make you feel better….

Try a beginers yoga class. The instructor will help you so that you stretch without hurting yourself.

Crystal,
I am currently fighting some back issues. Sciatic (sp) nerve problems and across my lower back. The nerve issues are negatively affected by my job which requires a lot of sitting and also my posture and weight don’t help. The other lower back issue is related, I pick up my nephews by bending over as opposed to squatting and using my legs. I should not be carrying them around either. That being said.
As far as stretching… you have gotten some pretty good advice so far but what I will add is that when I am in a sitting position I bend at the waist and lay my upper body down over my thighs with my head hanging between my knees and my arms on the outside of my knees. That in and of itself is a wonderful relief of stress & pain. I use an exercise ball to do stretching also. I sit on the floor indian style and with my left hand on top of the ball I roll the ball as far to the right as possible and then switch hands to the take it back left. I also sit on the floor with my legs flat on the floor in a “V” and then reach straight out in front as far as I can and to the left & right.
I have been going to a chiropractor & massage therapist and they did help but these exercises help more. Do check the internet though for additional exercises.

Can’t give any advice on stretching…but I can give you a tidbit about your back pain.
Have you tried taking METHYL SULFONYL METHANE (msm for short)?
You have to take anywhere from 4000mg to 6000mg (Valerie sax ion and health suggest maybe even taking more than that per you can’t over dose on this natural supplement per it’s found in your body already but depletes the older you get).
Start slow, maybe taking 2000mg to start and slowly increasing the dosage (also, don’t take it past 2:00 in the afternoon or you’ll get no sleep).
Some studies have had there participants taking between 24,000 to 30,000 mg a day (no it’s not a typo).
Just taking 500 or 1000mg won’t work to help the pain. Do your own research – I put a link below to get you started.
Don’t just take my words – do the research, run it past your doctor – take the two resources (your doc and research) and in the end make your own decisions about your own health.
It works – Good Luck…
p.s. I do not work for the company below, nor do I receive incentive…this link is just here to help you start off your research… God Bless…
