Exercise and walking are keys to keeping your back in good shape. Arthritis is a possibility, anytime there is an injury to a joint. The numbness you feel will likely be permanent, but as you said, if that's all you suffer, you are blessed. Lifting properly, and keeping yourself in shape, should help you keep your back strong. I have had two neck surgeries/fusing three levels with a plate and six screws. I also suffer scoliosis in my mid back, and have had two serious injuries to my low back, with permanent damage. I am disabled by pain and the injuries, I take Methadone for pain management. To make life better for me, I walk daily and enjoy the few activities I can handle without increasing my pain level, fishing is one. I use heating pads daily, rice socks daily/weekly, I use Valerian for muscle spasms, as well as alternative methods of medication to stimulate appetite, and ease muscle spasms, and to aid in getting proper sleep. I've had chronic pain for 17yrs. Take care of your back, living in chronic pain, is life changing.

I'm sorry that your leg is numb on the right side; sometimes I wish that my leg was numb because I actually have hypersensitivity in my leg which has caused me to have back surgery to go into the nerves and implant a Spinal Cord Stimulator to help with the pain in my leg. Water aerobic exercises is excellent for the back, and overall light exercises is good for people after they've had back surgery. There is probably some risk to arthritis after surgery, but I don't know of much you can do to prevent arthritis (trust me I would if I knew of anything because I'm 14, almost 15, and my doctors said that underneath my one kneecap that I have enough arthritis to look like a knee from a 40 year old).
