Will I Be Able To Get Disability If Im Off Work From 6 Months To A Year Due To Back Surgery?

I am having back surgery in 3-4 weeks and it will take 6 months to a year to heal. I more than likely will not be able to return to work and have a possibility of losing my car. I won’t be able to bend over or lift anything. I was just wondering what I should do? Would I qualify for disability?

Do you have a short term disability policy?? If so, you would likely qualify. If you are talking about social security disability, you need to have something wrong that will be EXPECTED to keep you from working for over a year or result in death. Unless you are over 50 or 55, you would not be considered disabled unless something goes horribly wrong.

If you have a policy right now, whether through an individual or company sponsored plan, then you should be covered. Disability was created to protect you from these risks, so as long as you have a current policy and the medical supports the disability, you will be covered.
If you are saying that you are currently not insured and you want to go out and buy a policy now to cover you for a scheduled surgery, then the answer is no.
This would be considered a pre-existing condition and you would be declined coverage.
Thinking about it from the insurers perspective, would you let someone pay you six months of premium knowing you would be paying them 40-80% of their salary for the next 6-12 months?
You wouldn’t because you would lose a killing.
Plus, you would probably cancel your policy after you were better, anyways. It’s called adverse selection and insurers won’t deal with it, so they will just decline you for coverage.
Social Security wouldn’t kick in until after 6 months, IF you qualify.

you will be covered by disability. I was out for 3 months after neck surgery. I wasn’t allowed in a car. i believe it is 2/3 of your pay that disability pays. Check to see if you can get any insurance for any payments that need to be paid while you are out of work. You usually need to have 30 days from the time you sign up for credit card insurance and such. Check it out quickly and find out the terms of the amount of time needed for the activation before being able to use the insurance. good luck with your surgery.
